Program Description

Foundations and Frameworks: Advancing Structural and Geotechnical Engineering is a technical conference designed to deepen the understanding and application of modern structural and geotechnical engineering practices using Bentley’s advanced suite of software tools. This event is a convergence of top industry professionals and technical experts who will showcase pioneering solutions, real-world case studies, and future-ready approaches for designing and analyzing resilient infrastructure systems.

Civil engineers and allied professionals will benefit from expert-led presentations that bridge theory and practice, featuring innovations in ground improvement forensics, advanced finite element analysis, resilient infrastructure design, and optimization of liquid-retaining and geotechnical structures.

This technical conference aims to advance the competencies of professionals and students in structural and geotechnical engineering through a technical exchange of best practices, software innovations, and case-based learning using Bentley’s infrastructure solutions. At the end of this technical conference, participants will have an overview of how to:

  • Investigate and interpret geotechnical failure cases using advanced modeling tools like PLAXIS 3D and STAAD.Pro.
  • Integrate ADINA with STAAD.Pro for conducting sophisticated nonlinear structural analysis.
  • Leverage Bentley’s software ecosystem for the planning and design of smart, connected infrastructure systems.
  • Model complex liquid-containing concrete structures using plate elements in STAAD.Pro under realistic load conditions.
  • Apply geotechnical resilience strategies to optimize the performance of infrastructures exposed to natural and climate-induced hazards.

TOPIC OVERVIEW / ABSTRACT:

“A FORENSIC INVESTIGATION OF GROUND IMPROVEMENT FAILURE BENEATH A TANK FARM: GEOTECHNICAL INSIGHTS AND LESSONS LEARNED USING BENTLEY STAAD.PRO AND PLAXIS 3D”

Speaker: Engr. Christian G. Seso, RCE, MSCE
Principal Geotechnical Engineer / Owner, CGSeso Engineering & Construction

This session presents a detailed forensic geotechnical investigation to determine the cause of significant settlement observed in several tanks within a tank facility located in Batangas. Despite prior ground improvement measures, the site experienced differential settlement, prompting a comprehensive analysis using STAAD.Pro and PLAXIS 3D. The presentation walks participants through the investigative methodology, interpretation of subsurface behavior, and simulation techniques that revealed the underlying failure mechanisms. Recommendations for remedial solutions and design improvements will also be shared, offering critical lessons for engineers working on complex soil-structure interactions and tank farm foundations.

“ADVANCED APPLICATIONS OF STAAD WITH ADINA”

Speaker: Madhan Elumalai
Senior Technical Manager, Engineering Simulation, Bentley Systems

This session dives into the advanced capabilities achieved through the integration of STAAD.Pro with ADINA (Automatic Dynamic Incremental Nonlinear Analysis). Participants will explore how this powerful combination enables engineers to perform nonlinear, dynamic, and complex simulations of solids, structures, and fluids. The presentation includes practical examples where STAAD’s core capabilities are extended using ADINA’s advanced material models and finite element techniques, addressing scenarios such as seismic performance, plastic deformation, and structural failure analysis.

“SMART INFRASTRUCTURE DESIGN USING INTEGRATED BENTLEY SOFTWARE SOLUTIONS”

Speaker: Engr. John Paul P. Dela Rosa, RCE
Principal Engineer/Director, Xstructures Engineering Consultants

Smart infrastructure requires smart tools. This presentation showcases a fully integrated approach to designing buildings, roads, and water systems using Bentley’s suite of connected software. From OpenRoads and OpenFlows to STAAD.Pro and PLAXIS, attendees will discover how seamless data exchange and multi-disciplinary coordination can significantly enhance productivity and project accuracy. The session emphasizes real-world applications, collaborative workflows, and lifecycle optimization, helping engineers and designers align their projects with the demands of urban development, sustainability, and resilience.

STRUCTURAL MODELING OF LIQUID-CONTAINING CONCRETE STRUCTURES USING STAAD.PRO

Speaker: Engr. Christian A. Leobrera, RCE, MSCE
Marine Structural Engineer, GHD

This technical session focuses on the specialized analysis of concrete structures that contain liquid, such as reservoirs, sewage treatment tanks, and water tanks. Leveraging STAAD.Pro, the presentation demonstrates how plate finite elements can be effectively used to model the structural behavior of these systems under hydrostatic and dynamic loads. The session includes modeling strategies, key design considerations, and case-based simulations. Emphasis is placed on how to achieve both structural integrity and serviceability in compliance with modern design standards. A must-attend for engineers involved in water infrastructure and hydraulic facilities.

DESIGN OPTIMIZATION AND RESILIENCE ASSESSMENT OF GEO-STRUCTURES AGAINST NATURAL HAZARDS AND CLIMATE EVENTS

Speaker: Xin Cheng Lin
Success Manager, Geotechnical, Bentley Systems

This forward-looking session addresses the critical need to design and evaluate geotechnical systems under the growing threat of natural hazards and climate variability. Using PLAXIS and other Bentley geotechnical tools, participants will learn about the latest approaches in design optimization, risk-informed decision-making, and performance-based assessment of slopes, retaining walls, foundations, and embankments. The presentation includes real-world examples and simulation workflows that showcase how resilience can be integrated into geotechnical design from the start. Engineers will leave equipped with strategies to make infrastructure safer, more adaptive, and more sustainable in a changing climate.
